Kitchen Remodel Cost: The Decisions That Set the Number

A kitchen remodel cost is settled by a handful of decisions, and almost all of them are made before demolition starts. Cabinetry scope, countertop material, whether the layout moves, what the appliances and fixtures require, and what the walls turn out to be hiding. None of those are aesthetic questions. Each one pulls a different trade into the room, and the room is small enough that the trades have to be sequenced rather than run in parallel. Nakamura Contractors handles kitchen remodeling with custom designs, cabinet installation and countertop upgrades under Florida license CBC-1268079, and the complete list of what a project can cover is on our Services page.

What Moves a Kitchen Remodel Cost the Most

Cabinetry is the first and largest variable, and it is not a single choice. The carcass construction, the door style, the interior hardware, the extent of custom work where walls are not square, and how much of the room the runs actually cover all sit under the same line item. A kitchen with a full-height pantry wall and an island base is a different cabinetry scope from a galley with two runs, even at identical square footage.

Countertops come next, and here the driver is material behavior rather than material name. Some surfaces need seam planning around a sink cutout, some need templating after cabinets are set rather than before, and some need edge detailing that adds fabrication time. Our Kitchens page sets out the full scope we cover: custom cabinetry, layout design, countertops, backsplash, appliances and fixtures.

Everything after those two is more predictable. Backsplash, flooring, lighting and paint are driven by area and preparation, which makes them the parts of a kitchen easiest to scope accurately up front.

Whether the Layout Moves Is the Biggest Single Decision

Keeping the sink, the range and the refrigerator where they already are keeps the project inside finish work. Move any of them and the job crosses into plumbing supply and drain relocation, electrical circuit work, and possibly venting, each of which carries its own permit and inspection.

Adding an island is the version of this that surprises people most. An island with a sink or a cooktop needs water, drain and power run through the slab or the ceiling, which is a very different scope from an island that is only cabinetry and a countertop. Both are legitimate choices, and island configurations appear across the modern kitchens in our completed work. The point is that the two are not variations on one line item.

Who Installs the Cabinets Changes the Outcome

Poor cabinet installation is visible from across the room, because every cabinet is a straight line next to another straight line. Ricardo Silva leads cabinet installation here with 25+ years of construction experience spanning plumbing, lighting, carpentry and custom cabinetry, and that cross-trade background is the reason a conflict gets caught during layout rather than after the countertop is templated.

Design carries the same weight. Geanne Almeida works in AutoCAD and ProKitchen with hands-on expertise in cabinetry and lighting design, which is how a concept becomes the finish and fixture schedule the installers actually build from. The full roster is on our Our Team page. Flooring choices are coordinated the same way, and the hardwood, tile and luxury vinyl plank options we install are set out on our Flooring & Finishes page.

Lead Times Put the Kitchen Out of Service

The schedule matters here in a way it does not in most rooms, because you cannot use the kitchen while it is being built. Cabinetry and countertops are the two items that set that duration, and both are ordered rather than stocked, so the calendar is partly outside anyone’s control.

That is worth planning for rather than hoping about. One of our kitchen clients, listed on our reviews as matthew mc, wrote about exactly this: “Delays from suppliers did put Nakamura Contractors in a difficult position. However, Edson and his team always kept us advised, and made things right in the end.” A timeline built on real lead times rather than optimistic ones is the difference between a delay you planned around and a delay that stops the job. Completed kitchen work is in our Portfolio.

Getting a Kitchen Remodel Cost for Your Own Kitchen

There is no useful average for a kitchen remodel cost, because the cabinetry scope and the layout question alone can separate two kitchens of the same size. The productive order is to settle whether the layout moves, decide the cabinetry scope, choose the countertop, then let those three produce the number. Estimates are free on every project, residential and commercial. We work throughout Stuart, Jupiter, Palm City and Boca Raton, with our office at 3159 SE Lionel Terrace Unit B, Stuart, FL 34997, open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, closed Sunday. Call (772) 278-1667, email contact@nakamuracontractors.com, or start through our Contact page and we will measure the room before putting a kitchen remodel cost on paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a kitchen remodel cost?

It is set mainly by three things: the cabinetry scope, the countertop material, and whether the layout moves. Appliance and fixture selections and the condition behind the walls adjust it from there. Two kitchens of identical size can land far apart on the first item alone, which is why we measure the room before quoting it. Estimates are free on every project, and the full scope we cover is on our Kitchens page.

Does moving the sink or the range change the price?

Yes, and it is the single change with the widest effect. Relocating a sink means supply and drain work, relocating a range means electrical or gas and often venting, and both bring permits and inspections that a finish-only remodel never touches. If the budget is fixed, keeping the existing locations is the most effective lever you have.

How long will my kitchen be out of service?

Cabinetry and countertops set the duration, because both are ordered rather than stocked and countertops are usually templated after the cabinets are set. That sequence cannot be compressed much. We build the timeline on real lead times rather than optimistic ones and tell you the order of operations up front, so you can plan temporary arrangements around the weeks that matter.

Do you handle the cabinets, or do I buy them separately?

We handle custom cabinetry and installation, with Ricardo Silva leading cabinet installation and Geanne Almeida producing the cabinetry and lighting design. Every cabinet trade we bring on is licensed and insured. You are also welcome to bring your own selections, and our in-house designer collaborates on material and finish decisions either way.

Can you update a kitchen without a full remodel?

Yes. Countertop upgrades, cabinet work, backsplash, flooring and painting can each be done on their own, and none of them requires moving plumbing or electrical. That makes a partial kitchen update far easier to scope accurately, and it is often the sensible first phase when the layout already works. Examples of completed kitchens are in our Portfolio.
